SMART 1 Implants: Advanced Implant Solutions

mm Written by Andrew Sedler

Dental Implants are by far the most widely prescribed treatment option for replacing missing teeth. Implants provide superior support for both removable prostheses as well as fixed restorations. The use of implants provides superior function as well as esthetics for patients. Implant therapies create successful tooth replacement options and help to prevent bone loss in edentulous areas.

When it comes to restoring dental implants, the components involved in the process are important to the longevity and success of the case. The SMART 1 Implant Abutments from Burbank Dental Lab offer versatility in their customizable design options.

SMART 1 Implant Abutments - Burbank Dental Lab - Burbank - Los Angeles

The SMART 1 Implant Abutments are custom designed to specifically meet the requirements of each individual case. These abutments work with most implant platforms. They can be milled out of titanium or zirconia with a titanium base. The emergence profile is carefully designed for each case to ensure optimal tissue contours.

The SMART 1 Implant Abutment can be used for both restoring missing single units or multi-units. The ideal space for the SMART 1 Implant is 9mm to 10mm for posterior teeth and 10mm to 12mm for a maxillary central. If interocclusal space is under 8m, these abutments are not recommended.

When the case is ready to deliver, it is important to follow the following protocol for cementation:

  1. Use a torque wrench set to the implant manufacturer’s specifications to tighten the abutment. It is important to adhere to the specifications. They are usually 15Ncm & 35Ncm.
  2. The abutment screw hole can be closed off using PTFE tape (Teflon). This tape is a great option since it can be sterilized and does not pick up unpleasant odors.
  3. Place cement in a ring about 1-2 mm from the margin.
  4. It has been widely accepted that these abutments and crowns should not be cemented with permanent cement. This is to ensure the crown can be retrieved easily.
  5. The cement being used should be radiopaque so that it is easy to spot subgingival excess.

SMART 1 Screw-Retained Restorations

SMART 1 Screw-Retained Restorations utilize a highly advanced milling process in the manufacture of the abutment. Specifically, the manufacturing process includes computer numerically controlled milling (CNC). This technology offers the highest level of precision.

SMART 1 screw-retained restorations offer the following benefits:

  • Emergence profiles are ideal
  • Facilitates healthy tissue
  • Able to correct angulation issues
  • Precise anatomical designs provide ideal support

The SMART 1 line of screw-retained restorations falls within three categories. These are:

SMART 1 Screw-Retained Zirconia Restorations

SMART1 screw retained abutment CO/CR

SMART 1 Screw-Retained Zirconia Restorations are excellent options when restoring a missing tooth in the anterior region of the mouth. These restorations offer a natural result and are best prescribed when aesthetics is a critical component of case success. This is due in part to the material offering a natural light transmission, making these extremely life-like when placed next to natural dentition.

SMART 1 Screw-Retained Zirconia Restorations offer the flexibility of either being milled as a monolithic restoration or they can be layered. These implant restorations should be prescribed under the following conditions:

  • Interocclusal space should be under 7mm.
  • Cement Cleanup may be difficult.
  • Great option when tissue needs shaping.
  • When aesthetics are critical to patient satisfaction
  • These screw-retained restorations offer retrievability

These SMART 1 Implant Restorations should not be prescribed if the screw access hole is on the buccal, facial, or functional cusp. It is also important to check the occlusion and the implant diameter to lessen the risk of fracture.

SMART 1 Porcelain Fused to CO/CR

The SMART 1 Screw-Retained porcelain fused to CO/CR offers an excellent option for both single-unit restorations and multi-unit restorations (see image above). These abutments are milled on a CNC milling system. Fewer than 5% of labs currently offer CNC milling options. The CNC technology offers unmatched precision capabilities as well as strength. The accuracy of these abutments is within 30 microns. The CO/CR frame is stronger than any other dental alloy (800 MPa).

After the abutments are milled, porcelain is layered directly to the CO/CR to completely restore the case. Also, these should not be prescribed when the screw access hole comes out on the facial or on a functional cusp.

SMART 1 - Burbank Dental Lab - Burbank - Los Angeles

Burbank Dental Lab can accept implant cases using either the traditional impression method or digital scans (image shown above). The digital scanning process is done using a scannable impression coping, also known as a scan body. The scan body is placed in the implant location and then scanned with an intraoral scanner.

As with any digital impression, the opposing bite is also scanned. For best results, the following is recommended:

  1. Plan the case with a Burbank Dental Lab implant specialist.
  2. Provide a scan of the scan body, soft tissue, opposing, and bite relationship.
  3. Make sure the scan body being used is free from any damage, as this will affect the case’s outcome.

SMART 1 Dental Implant abutments allow Burbank Dental Lab to have both control of the design of the implants as well as improved customization. Each abutment is custom designed to create ideal emergence profiles to ensure healthy tissue. Also, angulation issues are able to be corrected, creating the opportunity for more esthetic and functionally correct outcomes. The implant team at Burbank Dental Lab is available to help plan your next implant case. Call or chat today to discuss your next case.
