Smart1 Implants:

THE ANSWER TO PERFECTING DENTAL IMPLANT ABUTMENTS

Millions of people experience tooth loss. Data from the American Academy of Implant Dentistry states there are over 30 million people missing teeth in one or both arches. Even more common, however, is that according to The American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons approximately 69 percent of adults between 35 and 44 years of age have lost at least one tooth.

According to the Journal of Dental Research, the past two decades have experienced significant growth with implant placements at .7% in 2000 to 5.7% in 2016. The study also projects implant prevalence ranging from a conservative 5.7% up to 23%.

Missing teeth is a common problem that has been met with the common practice of placing implants. The leading cause for the growth of dental implants as a modality in treatments is the tremendous advantage dental implants have over other treatment options. Dental implants replace missing dentition while preserving adjacent teeth and bone.

In more extensive cases, where multi-unit implants are used, such as edentulous or partially edentulous patients, implant rehabilitation dramatically improves the patient's quality of life. In keeping up with these trends in dentistry, at Burbank Dental Lab we have dedicated our resources to meet the needs of the ever-expanding implant market through the development of our proprietary Smart1® implant abutments.

Smart1 Implant System

Smart1® implants from Burbank Dental Lab are custom designed to the specifics of each case. Utilizing some of the industry's most advanced CAD/CAM technology and most highly skilled technicians, the Smart1® implant is designed with ideal contours and emergence profiles to create perfect soft-tissue contours. In keeping with our commitment to provide outstanding service to the dental industry, the Smart1® Implant system supports the needs of clinicians and offers the following additional benefits:

  • Smart1® implants can be used with virtually every implant system. This allows clinicians the freedom to use the implant platform that is ideal for each specific patient issue.
  • The Smart1® implant department is available at any time to answer questions or help with case planning to ensure the case is successful every time.
  • Burbank stands behind the product through a warranty that includes the implant manufacturers' warranty and the abutment and crown. Smart1 custom abutments are backed by a minimum 7-year limited warranty.

Smart1® implant abutments can be made with several different material choices, including titanium, zirconia with a titanium base, or Co/Cr. The abutments can also be designed as cementable or screw-retained, depending on the specific needs of the case.

Smart1 Screw-retained Abutments - Porcelain fused to CO/CR

Smart Composite

Smart1® Screw Retained – Porcelain fused to Co/Cr restorations offer precision and strength. This material surpasses all other alloy options with a flexural strength at 800mpa. This strength makes it a great choice when the interocclusal space is below 7mm. The accuracy of the interface is at 30 microns. The fabrication of these abutments requires specialized precision milling equipment (CNC milling) that is currently only offered in less than 5% of the dental labs in the United States.

Smart1 Screw Retained

This material is an excellent option for a single unit or multi-unit cases. Layered porcelain can be directly applied to the Co/Cr abutment, and this customization makes it an excellent choice for tissue shaping. It is beneficial to use when cement cleanup may be laborious, and retrievability is necessary.

Smart1 Screw-retained Abutments - Zirconia

SmartComposite: A Smart Answer to Fixed Dental Restorations

Smart1® Screw-Retained Zirconia Abutments are best utilized in the anterior region where esthetics are critical. These restorations offer excellent natural light transmission, making them one of the most vital implant options. These zirconia implant crown restorations are combined with a titanium interface that fits precisely with the implant base and utilizes the exact platform to torque the abutment to the implant properly. These screw-retained implant abutments can either be finished using a monolithic restoration or can be layered for a more precise esthetic outcome.

These are not recommended in cases where the screw access hole ends on the facial, or a functional cusp. In situations like this, it would be best to consider a cementable option. It is also essential to carefully evaluate occlusion, function, and the diameter of the implant to reduce the chance of fracture.

Smart1 Cementable

Smart 1 cementable restorations

Cementable can be fabricated in either titanium or zirconia with a titanium base similar to the screw-retained versions. They can be used in both single tooth or multi-abutment cementable cases. They are ideal for cases where the interocclusal space is 9-10mm in the posterior and 10-12mm in the maxillary central.

Delivery and cementation tips:

  • Know the implant manufacturer's specifications for tightening the specific abutment. Use a torque wrench set to this specification. It is usually between 15 to 35 Ncm.
  • Use PTFE tape (Teflon) to close the abutment screw hole. This tape can be sterilized.
  • Place cement 1-2 mm from the margin.
  • Use cement that is designed specifically for implant-supported crown placement on implant abutments so that the implant-retained crown and abutment are retrievable.

Smart1® Cementable restorations can be used with all implant systems. The precision of the design software and milling system is unparalleled. They provide for natural emergence profiles and contours as well as margin integrity. This is the main advantage of utilizing custom vs. stock abutments.

Burbank Dental Lab is consistently involved in research and development of new products, systems, and technologies that are focused on the needs of clinicians. With such a large and growing demand for dental implant treatments in the United States, the Smart1® implant abutment was created to offer a streamlined approach to dental implant fabrication. They can be used on virtually any implant platform. The warranty outperforms many that are provided by the implant manufacturers, and they offer incredible precision.
