Clinical Handling

SMART 1 Abutments are designed to integrate effortlessly into your workflow. Their precision engineering provides a hassle-free experience, from case planning to final restoration.

  • Titanium abutments: The robust design withstands occlusal forces, making them suitable for both anterior and posterior applications. Additionally, the titanium abutment(s) can be anodized for a more natural effect.
  • Zirconia abutments: Highly aesthetic and pre-shaded for natural blending. Perfect for anterior regions where appearance is critical.

Implant Workflow

To ensure the successful fabrication of SMART 1 Implant Abutments, dentists need to provide essential information and materials tailored to their preferred workflow. Burbank Dental Lab accommodates traditional and digital workflows, streamlining the process for predictable outcomes.

Traditional Workflow

The preparation of IPS e.max restorations is essential to their longevity and success. Follow these guidelines to achieve the best results:

  1. Impression taking – Capture precise details of the surrounding tissue and neighboring teeth with a PVS impression of the implant site.
  2. Implant analog – Send the corresponding implant analog for accurate model creation.
  3. Bite registration – Include a precise bite registration to establish proper occlusion.
  4. Shade selection – Specify the desired shade for optimal aesthetic matching.
  5. Lab prescription – Clearly outline the case requirements, including material preference (titanium or zirconia with Ti-base), abutment design, and emergence profile.

Digital Workflow

  1. Intraoral scan – An intraoral scanner captures a detailed digital scan of the implant site. Ensure the scan includes implant-specific scan body, neighboring teeth, gingival contours, and occlusal surfaces. Please make sure to include specific platform company, series, diameter, and scan body used.
  2. Digital file submission – Upload the scanned file in STL or compatible format through Burbank Dental Lab’s online portal.
  3. Design preferences – Communicate specific design requirements, including angulation, tissue support, and material choice.
  4. Shade and material specification – Indicate the desired shade and whether titanium or zirconia with Ti-base is preferred.

SMART 1 Abutment Placement Guidelines

Due to their precise fabrication and custom design, SMART 1 Implant Abutments and restorations can be placed chairside easily. To ensure optimal placement and fit, follow these steps:

  1. Inspect the abutment – Verify the abutment’s design and fit before placement. Ensure that it matches the lab prescription and is free of contaminants.
  2. Prepare the implant site – Remove any debris or healing abutments from the implant site. Confirm that the implant platform is clean and ready for abutment placement.
  3. Seat the abutment – Align the abutment with the implant and gently seat it using a handpiece or manual driver. Ensure the connection is secure without excessive force.
  4. Tighten the abutment screw – Use the torque specifications provided by the implant manufacturer to secure the abutment in place. Do not overtighten the implant or abutment as this could compromise it.
  5. Evaluate fit and positioning – Check the abutment’s angulation and emergence profile to ensure it aligns appropriately with the prosthetic design. Make minor adjustments to the crown or restoration as needed.
  6. Take a radiograph—Confirm the proper seating of the abutment with a radiograph to ensure there are no gaps at the implant-abutment interface.
  7. Soft tissue management – Verify that the abutment supports the gingival tissue adequately and promotes healthy tissue integration.

Implant Restoration Cementation Guidelines

If the SMART 1 Abutment and final crown were requested separately, cementation of restorations on SMART 1 Abutments requires attention to detail to achieve a secure bond and optimal aesthetics:

  1. Clean the abutment: Remove contaminants with an ultrasonic cleaner or alcohol rinse.
  2. Try-In the restoration: Check for fit, occlusion, and aesthetics before cementation.
  3. Surface preparation: For zirconia restorations, use a primer to enhance adhesion.
  4. Cement application: Apply resin cement evenly to the internal surface of the crown or bridge.
  5. Final seating: Seat the restoration with firm pressure and cure according to the cement manufacturer’s recommendations.

Chairside Adjustments

Dentists rarely need to adjust SMART 1 Abutments due to their precise fabrication using state-of-the-art CAD/CAM technology. These custom abutments are designed to fit perfectly and meet the specific needs of each case. However, the dental crowns or restorations placed over the abutments may occasionally require minor adjustments.

  • Use fine-grit diamond burs to carefully modify contours or occlusion for crown adjustments.
  • Ensure the crown’s surface is polished after adjustments to maintain aesthetics and prevent wear on opposing teeth.
  • To protect the restoration’s material integrity, avoid overheating it during adjustments. Use water to keep the material cool, preventing micro-fractures in the zirconia.

FAQ

What is the difference between titanium and zirconia abutments?

Titanium abutments provide superior strength and are ideal for posterior restorations and cases with high occlusal loads. They are highly durable, resistant to fracture, and support healthy tissue integration due to their biocompatibility.

On the other hand, zirconia abutments offer superior aesthetics and are recommended for anterior restorations or areas with high aesthetic demands. These abutments are an excellent option for patients with a thin gingival tissue biotype because their toothlike color prevents the inevitable graying effect that can come from titanium abutments in these cases. While zirconia abutments are strong, they are best suited for less force-intensive areas where appearance is critical.

Are SMART 1 Implant Abutments compatible with all implant systems?

SMART 1 Implant Abutments are designed to be compatible with most major implant systems, ensuring flexibility for a wide range of restorative needs. This compatibility makes them an excellent choice for practices with multiple implant brands.

Consult Burbank Dental Lab for detailed information regarding your preferred system. Their adaptability ensures a streamlined workflow and reliable integration into your existing protocols.

Why are custom abutments a better choice than stock abutments?

Custom abutments provide a tailored fit for each case, ensuring optimal support for the prosthetic restoration. Unlike stock abutments, which have a one-size-fits-all approach, custom abutments are designed to match the patient’s specific angulation, emergence profile, and tissue contours.

This customization improves aesthetics, promotes tissue integration, and enhances functionality. Custom abutments also minimize the need for adjustments, saving valuable chair time and ensuring more predictable outcomes.
