According to the American Academy of Implant Dentistry, over 30 million people have missing teeth in one or both arches. More than 69 percent of adults aged 35 to 44 have lost at least one tooth. Implant placement is a standard solution to missing teeth. Implants have several significant advantages over other treatment options, which has led to their rapid growth as a treatment modality.

A dental implant replaces missing teeth and preserves adjacent teeth and bone. Patients with edentulous or partially edentulous mouths, whose condition requires multi-unit implants, benefit significantly from implant rehabilitation. By developing our proprietary SMART 1® implant abutments, Burbank Dental Lab keeps up with these trends in dentistry to meet the demands of an ever-expanding implant market.

SMART 1® Screw-Retained Abutments – Porcelain fused to CO/CR

Smart1® Implants: The Answer to Perfecting Implant Abutments

With SMART 1® Screw Retained restorations, porcelain is fused to Co/Cr for strength and precision. One of the most significant advantages of this alloy is its flexural strength of 800 MPa. As a result of its strength, it is an excellent choice when the interocclusal space is less than 7mm. Unfortunately, fewer than 5% of dental labs in the United States offer specialized precision milling equipment (CNC milling) to fabricate these types of abutments.

This material is an excellent option for manufacturing a single unit or a multi-unit case. Layering porcelain directly on top of the Co/Cr abutment creates an ideal situation for tissue contours. This option is beneficial if cement cleanup is difficult and retrievability is required.

The Properties of Composite

Dental Implants: SMART 1 Implant Options at Burbank Dental Lab

In the anterior region, where esthetics are critical, SMART1® screw-retained zirconia abutments are the best option. These tooth restorations can effectively transmit natural light, making them an essential option for dental implants.

Restorations such as these use zirconia implant crowns with titanium interfaces. The interface fits precisely with the implant by using the exact platform to torque the abutment to the implant base. Depending on the desired aesthetic result, these screw-retained implant abutments can be finished with a monolithic or layered restoration.

These types of abutments are not recommended in cases where the screw access hole will be present on the facial of the crown or on a functional cusp. A cementable option would be the best choice in situations like this.

Also, it is essential to carefully evaluate occlusion, function, and implant diameter to reduce fracture risk.

Smart 1® Cementable Abutments

Dental Implants: SMART 1 Implant Options at Burbank Dental Lab

In addition to screw-retained restorations, SMART 1® cementable restorations are available in titanium or zirconia. They can be used either for single-tooth cases or multi-abutment cases. Ideally, they should be used in cases where the interocclusal space is 9-10 mm in the posterior and 10-12 mm in the maxillary central.

Tips for cementing and delivering:

  • It is essential to know the tightening specifications of the implant manufacturer for the specific abutment. A torque wrench set to this specification should be used. In general, it ranges from 15 to 35 Ncm. (See image below)
  • To seal the abutment screw hole, use PTFE tape (Teflon). The tape can be sterilized.
  • Cement should be placed 1-2 mm from the margin.
  • Ensure that the implant-retained crown and abutment are retrievable by using cement designed specifically for implant-supported crown placement on implant abutments.

SMART 1 Implant Abutments - Burbank Dental Lab - California

All implant systems can be used with SMART 1® cementable restorations. There is no comparison to the precision of the design software and milling system. Doing so ensures natural emergence profiles, contours, and margin integrity. A custom abutment has this significant advantage over a stock abutment.

To meet the needs of clinicians, Burbank Dental Lab continuously researches and develops new technologies, systems, and products.

For example, SMART 1® implant abutments were created in response to the growing demand for dental implant therapies in the United States. You can use almost any implant platform with them. Additionally, they provide incredible precision, and they outperform many implant warranties.
