Why You Should Learn to Love Providing Dentures

mm Written by Andrew Sedler

Many dentists that I speak to do not like providing dentures as a service to their dental practice.

So the question is, why do some dentists avoid doing dentures?

The reasons are varied:

  • dentures are not glamorous,
  • patient satisfaction is low,
  • and dentures can be less profitable than other procedures.

Demand for Quality Dentures

However, there is a high demand for quality dentures. Over 25% of patients over the age of 65 are edentulous! That is a tremendous number of patients that desperately need quality treatment, and that is a massive potential income for a dental practice.

"Burbank Dental Lab knows how to use the records you provide as a dentist to fabricate an accurate well-fitting denture. It's why for more than 40 years we've been known as the leader in reliable, esthetic dentures."

--- TONY SEDLER, PRESIDENT

There is a potential upside to becoming good at dentures.  Sixty percent (60%) of patients with dentures would pay more for a denture that looked more natural and was comfortable. How many procedures do you offer that have 60% of all patients saying that they would pay more?

Isn't that worth learning how to enjoy and becoming comfortable and skilled at providing a quality denture for your patients?

How To Make Dentures An Enjoyable Part of Your Dental Practice

Manage patient expectations

Even the very best denture is not going to replace the patient's experience of their natural teeth. If patients are not adequately educated as to the limits of a denture, then they will be disappointed.

Initial clinical records are the foundation of a quality denture

Take the clinical steps to capture ALL of the intra-oral records that will facilitate the best possible denture comfort, function, and esthetics.

  1. Take an initial impression to make a custom tray.
  2. Take final impression with a custom tray.
    • Border mold custom tray. (Fig. 1)

    Boarder Molding-
    • Make sure that borders are extended into the vestibule, but do not impinge on muscle attachment landmarks.
    • Extend impression to the retro-molar pads on the mandibular, and post-dam area, and Hamular Notch on maxillary.
    • The impression should be taken with a light body impression material to capture all of the details
    • Before final wash impression, remove any areas where the tray kisses through the body impression. (Relieve 1-2 mm )
    -
  3. What are the patient's desires?
  4. Patient's present complaints - It is essential to understand what problems you are trying to solve.
  5. Examination and evaluation of the current denture.

Consider adding these tools to your denture tool belt:

  • Massad or Edent denture trays.   (Fig. 2 Massad Trays)

  • Ivoclar Centric Tray denture system - the Centric Tray is utilized to determine the precise dimensions of the patient's occlusal position.

Work with a lab that can deliver the best possible denture

Work closely with a dental lab that knows how to use the records that you provide to fabricate an accurate well-fitting denture.  Make sure that the dental lab uses advanced denture materials and processing techniques that will give you the most reliable and durable results.

Burbank Dental Lab is just such a lab. Burbank has provided reliable, esthetic dentures for over 40 years.

Our premium Smiles By Design Denture is a distinct upgrade. This denture employs the use of the Ivoclar SR-IvoBase Injection System to achieve the pinnacle of excellence. The IvoBase System uses the precision of high-pressure injection with the top performance of IvoBase denture acrylic. The result is a denture with more consistency and significantly higher accuracy than other techniques.

The Smiles By Design Denture also includes Premium Denture Teeth. Choose from premium denture teeth like Ivoclar BlueLine or Dentsply IPN.

What makes the Smiles By Design Denture your best choice?

The IvoBase Injector permits a fully automated, controlled injection and polymerization procedure of special PMMA resins. The chemical shrinkage of the resin is entirely compensated during polymerization—thanks to the patented temperature control in the flask and the heater.

The IVOBase system uses a pre-measured liquid and powder vial that guarantees a consistent mix every time, unlike hand mixed and packed acrylics that are not as precise or consistent.

IvoBase Press Injector

The IVOBase injection system is vastly superior to anything else available.

The material is injected with constant pressure so that as the denture base shrinks during the curing process, new resin is injected to compensate. The IVOBase produces a more accurate better-fitting denture that is also denser than conventional acrylics.

We have received consistent positive responses from clinicians that have prescribed the Smiles By Design Premium denture, the best fitting and most durable denture available.
