Material Selection for Optimal Dental Veneer Results: A Case Study - Burbank Dental Lab

Digital scanning has become an integral part of the dental workflow. With the advent of technology, the traditional impression-taking process has become outdated and is gradually being replaced by digital scanning. One of the more challenging situations to capture digitally are cases involving multi-unit implants.

The Imetrics ICAM 4D scanner provides a digital workflow option for these challenging cases.

iCam4D Overview – iMetric4D

The ICAM 4D scanner allows for the data capture of cases with multi-unit implants. Here at Burbank Dental Lab one of our primary focuses is finding solutions to difficult cases and simplifying workflows, which is why we have implemented Imetric4d’s ICam4d extraoral scanner technology into our multi-implant restoration process.

Multi-implant impressions can be challenging to take accurately. Getting a passive fit for the prosthesis is one of the biggest challenges. In order to ensure accuracy, it is necessary to be able to transfer the implant positions with precision to the working model. With multi-unit cases, the more implant units involved, the greater chance of decreased accuracy. Both digital scanners and conventional impressions have limitations that can lead to these inaccuracies.

An ICam4d camera system combines structured light and photogrammetric scans to capture three-dimensional data. This system is designed for large implant cases, and this service is available through Burbank Dental Lab.

ICam4D Multi-Unit Implant Workflow

Burbank Dental Lab is fortunate to work with Dr. Diana Sedler (pictured to the right) of Cutting Edge Periodontist in Burbank, California, who has worked on several of these multi-unit cases and provided photos from a recent case.

Her patient presented with six implants that needed to be restored.

A Burbank Dental Lab implant specialist was brought into the office to take the scan. The ICam system uses special scan bodies that are called ICamBodies.

These are inserted into each of the implant sites.

Once in place, these ICamBodies are recorded using the ICam4D camera.

This is a handheld device that is moved from one side of the patient’s mouth to the other. The ICamBodies provide the camera with the exact orientation and position of the implants.

The Complete Steps
  1. Schedule an Appointment – Clinicians do not need to purchase any equipment to use this system. An implant scan specialist at Burbank Dental Lab does the scan.

Call Burbank Dental Lab at (800) 336-3053 to schedule a scan session a minimum of 72 hours before the patient’s implant surgery appointment.
  2. Insert ICamBodies – During the appointment, ICamBodies will be provided for placement on the implant sites. Using the ICamBodies enables us to measure the orientation and position of the implants. As soon as they are inserted, the handheld ICam4D camera is used to collect data from one side of the patient’s mouth to the other.
  3. Record Data – As soon as the measurements are recorded, the ICam4D system will indicate the ICam position and whether the measurements have been recorded successfully. This process takes only a few minutes, from iCamBodies insertion, measurements, and iCamBodies removal.
  4. Impressions – After recording the ICam positions and removing the ICamBodies, ICamRefs are placed on the implants. An ICamRef is similar to a healing abutment. A conventional impression or intraoral scan can be performed once these are placed.
  5. Data Alignment – Using specialized scanning software, ICam position data and intra-oral tissue scan data are combined. Once the scan data has been aligned, it can now be processed utilizing CAD/CAM software.

Burbank Dental Lab Scanning Service

The scanning service from Burbank Dental Lab is dramatically changing the way multi-implant cases are done.

Other benefits include:

  • Significant reduction in the use of valuable chair time.
  • Predictable results.
  • Fewer materials costs because impressions are not needed.
  • No retry or re-impression is necessary as the system demonstrates the accuracy of fit.
  • Patients find this to be quicker and more comfortable than other methods of taking impressions.
  • Accurate measuring does not require a wide opening of the mouth.
  • No need for try-in appointments.
  • There is a near-perfect fit in the final restoration, adding comfort to the patient.
  • Reduction in treatment times.
Prosthetic Outcomes
ZIRMAX M from Burbank Dental Lab

With ICam4D, accuracy will be ensured, and a passive-fitting final prosthesis will be provided. It is now possible to focus on the best restorative option after the impression has been taken.

A variety of options are available through Burbank Dental Lab, including:

  • ZIRMAX M® Hybrid – This monolithic zirconia restoration is one of the strongest on the market. Bridges with wide spans and even full arch restorations are ideal for this material. It has a greater translucent capacity than other Zirconias by up to 25%.
  • SmartComposite Hybrid – The composite is milled over a cobalt-chromium substructure. Lightweight and highly polishable, these restorations offer less wear to natural dentition.
  • SMART 1® Screw Retained – There is also a cobalt-chromium substructure in this option. It is then layered with porcelain over the substructure, providing excellent aesthetics.
