Minimally Invasive Indirect Adhesive Restorations: Inlays, Onlays, and Veneers

Course Overview

This is a special 2-day course that will take participants from initial design through to final adhesion of the minimalistic adhesive restorations. From initial images, Photoshop Smile Design, Esthetic Prototype, esthetic conservative preparations, impressions, temporaries, sealing dentin and elevation of deep margin.

There will be lecture sessions throughout the two days on all the topics and several hands-on sessions on specially prepared typodonts to simulate the clinical conditions performed by Dr. McLaren. Also, a section on minimalistic posterior onlay and vonlay preparations with current concepts in “block out” restorations underneath ceramics.

Friday, October 4th – Day 1

  • 9:00 – 10:30 AM – LECTURE 1
    Intro to digital smile design using Photoshop. Indications for ECR/s and the Bonded functional esthetic prototype (BFEP’s) Lecture: The Bonded Function esthetic prototype (BFEP’s) technique as a “trial smile” and an interim bonding technique.
  • 10:30 – 10:45 – Break
  • 10:45 – 11:45 – DEMO
    Step-by-step fabrication of BFEP on Typodont using composite with clear matrix on BFEP’s (bonded mock-up)
  • 11:45 – 1:00 PM – HANDS-ON
    Step-by-step fabrication of BREF on Typodont using composite with clear matrix on BFEP’s (bonded mock-up)
  • 1:00 – 2:00 PM – LUNCH
  • 2:00 – 3:30 PM – LECTURE 2
    ECR anterior preparations: standard preparations, preparations for Diasthema closure preparations based on the final shading requirements, mini-veneer preparations, and no-preparation clinical indications.
  • 3:00 – 3:45 PM – BREAK
  • 3:45 – 4:45 PM – DEMO
    DEMO: Esthetic Ceramic Restoration preparations for teeth #5-#11 (standard vener #5), sealing and blocking out denting techniques.

    “Simple Techniques and Inexpensive Equipment” to get high-end dental and portrait imagery and Shade imagery photography

    Posterior ECR preparations (inlay, onlay, vonlay), Conventional and Chairside CAD-CAM fabrication technology. Dentin blocks outs and sealing dentin techniques.
  • 12:00 – 2:00 PM – LUNCH
  • 2:00 – 3:15 PM – HANDS-ON SESSION
    – Participants complete Inlay #2, Onlay, and Vonlay #4 preparation on Typodent Block out and margin elevation #2, #3 Dentin block outs and sealing dentin techniques
    – Defect-driven onlay preparation
    – Sealing dentin using universal
    – Block out using structural flowable
  • 3:15 – 3:30 PM – BREAK
    DEMO: Esthetic Ceramic Restoration preparations for teeth #5-#11 (standard vener #5), sealing and blocking out denting techniques.
  • 3:30 – 4:15 PM – LECTURE 4
    Bonding (resin cementation) ECR’s – ADHESION AND CEMENTS
  • 4:15 – 5:00 PM – DEMO
    Step-by-step demonstration of cementing an Anterior or Posterior ECR restoration on a Typodont
  • 5:00 – 6:00 PM – HANDS-ON
    Participants cement 1 ECR on a specially prepared Typodont following the technique demonstrated

Who is Dr. Ed McLaren

Dr. Ed McLaren, DDS MDC
DR. ED MCLAREN

Dr. McLaren is a Prosthodontist and Master Dental Ceramicist. He currently is the CEO of ArtOral America, a specialized high-end private teaching institute based in Park City, Utah.

He also maintains a private practice limited to prosthodontics and esthetic dentistry, in which he does all of his own ceramics.

Originally, Dr. Mclaren attended the University of Redlands, where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa and Magna Cum Laude. He received his D.D.S. from the University of the Pacific School of Dentistry, where he graduated Omicron Kappa Upsilon. After several years of general practice, he received his specialty certificate in Prosthodontics from UCLA School of Dentistry.

Dr. McLaren is a member of the American College of Prosthodontists, Pacific Coast Society of Prosthodontists, International College of Prosthodontists, American Academy of Esthetic Dentistry, International Society of Dental Ceramics, International Association of Dental Research, American Association of Dental Research, American Dental Association, and the California Dental Association.

Dr. McLaren is still actively involved in many areas of prosthodontic and materials research. He has also authored and/or co-authored over 90 articles. He is performing ongoing clinical research on various restorative systems. He has presented numerous lectures, hands-on clinics, and postgraduate courses on ceramics and esthetics across the nation and internationally. He published a book on his ceramic techniques and features dental photographic art, entitled “The Art of Passion: Ceramics, Teeth, Faces, and Places.”

Dr. McLaren retired from Professorship at both UCLA and UAB School of Dentistry. He was the director of the UCLA Center for Esthetic Dentistry, a full-time didactic and clinical program for graduate dentists.

He was also the founder and director of the UCLA/LACC Master Dental Ceramist program. This postgraduate program is a full-time master ceramist program for dental technicians, featuring extensive experience with the newest esthetic restorative systems.

At UAB, he was the founder and first director of the Advanced Dental Esthetics, founder director of the Advanced Dental Esthetics, Restorative & Biomaterials Program, founder and director 3-year advanced ceramics and digital technology for technicians program, founder and director one-year esthetic and restorative fellowship Restorative & Biomaterials Program, founder and director 3-year advanced ceramics and digital technology for technicians program, founder and director one-year esthetic and restorative fellowship. Dr Mclaren was also an Adjunct Assistant Professor for the University of Oregon Dental School.
